IN
A SERENDIPITIOUS EVENT ON EBAY, I FOUND FOUR PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN BY
C.D.
ARNOLD IN 1902 SHOWING THE POST-ERUPTION SCENES OF MOUNT PELEE ON
THE
ISLAND OF MARTINIQUE.
ITS UNKNOWN HOW ARNOLD TRAVELLED TO THE SITE - MANY MILITARY AND
PRIVATE
SHIPS WENTTO MARTINIQUE CARRYING RELIEF SUPPLIES, SCIENTISTS,
NEWS
REPORTERS, ETC. THESE ARE THE ONLY KNOWN ARNOLD PRINTS TO
SURFACE.
THEY ARE ROUGHLY 6X9" PLATINUM PRINTS. RESIDENTS OF
MARTINIQUE
TODAY INVOLVED WITH THE HISTORY OF THIS HORENDOUS VOLCANIC
ERUPTION
HAVE NEVER SEEN PHOTOS BY ARNOLD.
OBVIOUSLY
ARNOLD WOULD HAVE TAKEN MORE THAN FOUR PHOTOGRAPHS. WHO HE TOOK THEM
FOR (IF NOT FOR HIMSELF) AND WHAT BECAME OF THE REMAINDER OF THE PRINTS IS
UNKNOWN. THESE PRINTS ARE NUMBER 1,2,9,10. I DOUBT THIS WOULD HAVE
BEEN A PROJECT ARNOLD DID ON HIS OWN, THE ASSUMPTION IS HE WAS HIRED BY SOMEONE
TO DO THIS PROJECT.
