CHICAGO TRAFFIC POLICEMEN WRITE TICKETS FOR VIOLATIONS.
BUT JUST AS OFTEN (EXCEPT PARKING !) PEOPLE GET A "PASS", A WARNING
TO BE CAREFULL. AND JUST AS OFTEN, AT LEAST IN THE OLD DAYS, A PASS
WAS
GIVEN
AND A BUSINESS CARD WENT THE OTHER DIRECTION, FROM PASSEE TO PASSER. "IF
YOU EVER NEED.... "IF YOUR EVER IN THE AREA.." AND SO THE STORY WENT. IT
WAS KIND OF A POLITE YOU SCRATCH MY BACK, I'LL SCRATCH YOURS KIND
OF SITUATION. MY DAD DIDN'T LIKE PEOPLE WHO PUT A $FIVER UNDER THE DRIVERS
LICENSE...THAT MEANT A TICKET FOR SURE. BUT PEOPLE WHO WERE CONTRITE,
SORRY, FESSED UP TO THEIR TRAFFIC INDISCRETIONS, OFTEN GOT THE "PASS".
AND
TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT, CHRISTMAS
AT
OUR HOUSE WAS NEVER SHORT OF PACKAGES BROUGHT HOME AFTER A SHIFT. TURKEYS,
12 YEAR-OLD SCOTCH, WHATNOTS, DO-DADS, THINGAMAJIGS.
IT
WAS ALWAYS A BOUNTIFUL TIME. IT WASN'T GRAFT, CORRUPTION, OR WHATEVER
YOU CALL IT. ITS WAS THANKS FOR THE BREAK. IT WAS BEING A HUMAN BEING AMONGST
PEOPLE YOU MET AND WORKED FOR, AND WITH. THERE IS A GRAY AREA IN
EVERYTHING...ITS WHAT MAKES LIFE NOT ONLY POSSIBLE BUT TOLERABLE.
